Premier Cru

Premier Crus.

Before the 1855 World Exhibition in Paris the first ranking of the estates in Sauternes was established. The ranking of the estates was in three groups. Premier Crus Superieur, Premier Crus and Les second Crus. Many attempts have been made to develop new classification without success and by and large the same listing is still valid today.

At the Classification of 1855 nine estates qualified for Premier Crus:

Premier Crus:

  • Château La Tour Blanche
  • Château Peyraguey
  • Château Vigneau
  • Château Suduiraut
  • Château Coutet
  • Château Climens
  • Château Bayle
  • Château Rieussec
  • Château-Rabaud

From this list, Chateau Bayle has changed its name to Chateau Guirad. Chateau Vigneau is now called Chateau de Rayne-Vigneau. Chateau Peyraguey has been divided into two estates, namely Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey and Chateau Clos Haut-Peyraguey. Chateau Rabaud has also been divided into two estates with the names Chateau Sigalas-Rabaud and Chateau Rabaud-Promis.
