Château La Tour Blanche.

Château La Tour Blanche.

The history of Ch. La Tour-Blanche is not well known, but there are documents which indicate that the castle existed in the 18:th century.

The main building has two stories, but there is no information about who built it or when. Pierre Pécherie became the owner after the revolution in the late seventeen hundreds. According to the classification of Sauternes in 1855, Frederic Focke was the owner at that time. It is likely that Frederic Focke being the owner of La Tour-Blanche had great influence in the development of Sauternes in the entire region and that his work led to La Tour-Blance becoming the first to be classified as as 1:a cry directly under Yquem. After the passing of Frederic Focke, the estate was sold to a syndicate, which sold it on to Daniel Osiris Iffla.

Osiris had at his death in 1907 in his will testamented La Tour-Blanche to the French State with the proviso that the state would establish a viticulture school linked to the estate. This was accepted by the state and today there is a substantial educational centre. The Osiris name is still on the labels. Ch. La Tour-Blanche like many of the estates had a set back in quality during the mid nineteen hundreds. A strong improvement started from 1983 under the new management of Jean-Pierre Jausserrand, resulting in La Tour-Blanche now being one of the best in 1:a cry.

The three grapes grown in Sauternes are Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscatedelle. Ch. La Tour-Blanche use 78% Sémillon, 16%Sauvignon and 6% Muscadelle. This mix in combination with soil quality and professional production methods achieve the quality for which they strive. Each yearly batch matures in new oak vats for 20 to 24 months. The annual production is about 40’000 bottles of Ch.La Tour-Blanche premier Wine. Additionally, about 20’000 bottles are produced of a secondary wine sold at a lower price.
