Classification

Classification.

Classification of wines from Sauternes dates back to 1855 and this classification is still valid today.

The classification was done for the Paris World Exhibition. The base for the classification was the price paid during the preceding ten years for produce from the various chateaus.

Additional to Sauternes, there are four districts permitted to use the label Sauternes: Barsac, Preignac, Bommes and Fargues. The classing resulted in three different classes: Premier Crus Supérieu, Premier Crus Les seconds Crus

Only one Chateau qualified for the top class, Premier Crus Supérieu, namely Chateau d’Yquem. In premier Crus there were nine and in Les seconds Crus eleven Chateaus.
