The castle was sold in the seventeen hundreds to Nicolas Pierre de Pichard, who like so many of his countrymen ended his life on the guillotine. The newly formed state sold the estate, at the time called Chateau Pichard to the duo Lafaurie and Mauros. These two managed in less than 50 years improve the wine quality to the extent that the estate was classed number three, after Yquem and La Tour. |
The estate was sold to Comte Duchâtel after the death of Lafaurie. In 1879 the estate was divided in two lots. The lot on the hillside was named Ch.Clos Haut-Peyraguey and the lot in the valley was named Ch.Lafaurie-Peyraguey.
|
The size of the estate is about 40 hectares and mainly Semillon grapes are grown here as the mixing with Sauvignon has declined in latter years from 30% to 2%. The wine is stored in oak vats (of which 1/3 are new) for up to 30 months. The premier wine is marketed under the name Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey and the second grade under La Chapelle de Lafaurie.
