Château Guiraud.

Very little information has been found about this estate prior to the 18:th century, at which time it was called Bayle.  At that time the estate also included Chateau d’Issan.

The estate was divided into two lots at the beginning of the seventeen hundreds.

Chateau Bayle was then given the area which today is held by Ch. Guiraud.

The Guiraut family sold the estate in 1846 to a consortium, who in 1855 had the estate classed as premier cru.   The name was changed around 1860 to Ch .Guiraud and the owner at the time was the Bernard family.

The vineyard expanded and the cellers were refurbished under the management of the Bernard family.   The wine produced on the estate became famous and Ch.Guiraud had many good years in the late eighteen hundreds.

The estate was purchased at the beginning of the nineteen hundreds by the Maxwell family and the quality deteriorated.  Due to deteriorating quality, depression and war, the Maxwell family had to sell and the property went to Paul César Rival.

This man has gone down in history as the only person who ever built  a landing strip at a Bordeaux estate.  He furthermore went to history as the only man who crashed an aircraft into the Yquem vineyard.

The estate did not improve under the stewardship of Mr Rival. The estate was in poor condition and remained so until the Narby family became the new owner in 1981.

Ch. Guiraud was extensively renovated under the management of Narby and  had a number of good years.  Since 2006, the estate is owned by a group under the supervision of Robert Peugeot, perhaps better known in the world of automobiles.

Ch.Guiraud has a total area of 100 hectares for grape growing of which 85%  is used for the production of Sauternes and 15% for a dry white wine.

Ch.Guiraud uses a mix of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon grapes for the production of their Sauternes.

The wine is fermented in barrels during 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the state of the grapes.  After fermentation, the wine is matured in barrels for 18 to 24 months.
