Château Filhot story begins 1709, when Romain de Filhot bought a property named Maison de Noble Verdoulet. Filhot started with the construction of the building that remains today. The Pavilion was built around 1810, and the garden was designed by Fischer 1845. From 1807 Château Filhot and Château Coutet was included in the de Lur Saluce familys (owners of Château Yquem) property. The reason was that Madame de Lur Saluces son Antoine married Madame de Filhot, this year. |
It was the Lur Saluces family which was the owner of Château Filhot during the classification 1855. The family of the Lur Saluces sold Château Coutet 1922 and Château Filhot 1935. Late 1800 and early 1900's the maintenance was poorly, and the wine became of deteriorate quality. The bad trend lasted until 1974 when Henri de Vaucelles become responsible for Château Filhot. Together with his son Gabriel they started an extensive restoration work. |
The result has been a very big improvement that allows Château Filhot well deserves its place in Grand Cru. |
