Château Climens.

Ch.Climens history goes back to the 16th century.  The name is mentioned in a contract dated 1547.  At that time the estate was owned by the Roborel family.

The estate was under the ownership of the Bororel family for centuries, but at the end of the seventeen hundreds the castle and the vineyards were in very poor condition and it was sold in the year 1800 to Jean Binaud, who commenced a comprehensive restoration.

At the 1855 classification, the estate was under the ownership of the Lacoste family and was sold 1871 to Alfred Ribet, who let the estate deteriorate again.

The situation worsened, when France a few years later, was hit by grape phylloxera .

Eventually Henri Gounouilhou managed to turn things around and improved the quality to such a degree that Ch. Climens for some years challenged Yquem as the top estate in Sauternes.

Lucien Lurton acquired the estate in 1971 and since 1992 the estate has been administered by his daughter Bérénice Lurton.  The estate is situated in the village of Barsac and is often called Lord of Barsac.  There is one only vineyard and it is unchanged since growing of grapes started in the 16th century.  At Ch.Climens only Semillon is grown, this makes Ch.Climens the only of the 11 1:cru producing their wine solely from Semillon.
